Introducing Content Case Studies, a new series featuring content creators, why they started, what they create and the results they've experienced.

To kick off the series, we're going to learn about Srdjan (Serge) Popovic.

I met Serge over on LinkedIn; he is the CMO of Crossrope, my favorite workout accessory. He also is the author of The Effective CMO blog and when he agreed to be featured here, I knew he'd be the perfect inaugural Content Case Study. So, without further ado, here's Srdjan!

Quick stats:

Name: Srdjan Popovic

Company: The Effective CMO

Location: Toronto, ON, Canada

1. What do you do for a living, and how long have you been doing it?

I’m a former engineer turned marketer. I’m currently the Chief Marketing Officer at Crossrope, a unique fitness brand on a mission to inspire millions of people to discover a new way to get fit. I’ve been in this role for about six years.

More recently, I started creating content on my blog The Effective CMO to help people optimize their workday and unlock a new level of focus.

2. When did you start publishing content, and why? What compelled you to do so?

I started publishing content at the end of 2021. Writing has always been something I enjoyed doing, a forcing function that has pushed me to learn new things. Writing is what helped me make the transition from engineering to marketing back in 2015.

As I focused on my ever-changing role of a CMO of a fast-growing startup and then became a father of two little ones, I put writing on pause. But over the years the itch to get back into it has been growing and I decided to start again in late 2021.

I was compelled to do so because I love writing and get a lot of satisfaction from helping people. I think I can do that well through my writing.

3. What kind of content do you publish? Has that evolved into different types of content, or have you always published what you currently publish?

I mostly publish long guides, short thought-exercise posts, and text-based interviews with people who are in control of their time.

Since I’ve only been writing for a few months, the content hasn’t had much of a chance to evolve, but I think I can add the most value through lengthier guides and will likely focus on that.

4. Where do you publish your content and how often?

I publish content on my blog, www.theeffectivecmo.com at a cadence of once per week.

5. What benefits have you experienced as a result?

Writing, like I mentioned, is an amazing forcing function. You can’t write about something unless you understand the topic well. And to understand a topic well, you have to read about, look at different perspectives & opinions, and formulate your own thoughts around the topic. Writing is a great way to learn.

Aside from that, writing is something that allows me to get into a flow. Unless I’m barred by constraints, I can often get into a writing mode where time seems to stop and I can go on forever. It’s a great feeling.

6. Any pearls of advice/words of wisdom you’d like to share?

Write about something you enjoy.
